Thomas A. "Tom" Galloway, 81, of Sandusky, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, August 22, 2021, at the Cleveland Clinic, in Cleveland, OH, unexpectedly.
Born on February 5, 1940, in Sandusky, OH, he was the son of Ashley August and Frances Louise (Naderer) Galloway. He had attended St. Mary's High School and had graduated from Sandusky High School in 1958.
Tom was a former Sandusky firefighter having been with the Department from 1966 to 1978. Over the years, he and his brother, Dennis, had started several businesses from moving houses, to hauling rock and grain, on their days off from the fire department. In 1980, they formed Galloway Brothers, Inc., which is still family owned and operated to this day. Tom had a love for restoring and collecting old farm tractors and trucks. He started the Northern Ohio Antique Tractor Institute to help others enjoy his passion and had entertained visitors from around the USA and Europe. Tom did find time for some fun, taking the family to their cottage at Kelley’s Island where he taught his children to swim off the dock. For years, he and his brother owned several boats, with the last one being a 1971 Lyman, but sold it when gas went to 75 cents per gallon, figuring no one would run boats with those prices. Eventually, he fulfilled his dream of being a full-time farmer.
Tom was a very active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and had been a past president of St. Mary's Catholic Cemeteries board, and an active member of the Firelands Pioneer Tractor Club.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sue Ellen (Hanville) Galloway, whom he married on March 19, 1960; his children, Douglas A. (Dianne) Galloway of Sandusky, Christine M. (Bill) Galloway Sartor of Sandusky, Scott T. (Jenny) Galloway of Monroeville, Kasie L. (Thomas) Spence of Kelley’s Island, and Kellie S. (Lane) Risser of Columbus; 15 grandchildren, Danielle (Dustin) Malott, Cole (Megan) Galloway, Tyler (Krista) Galloway, Beki (Dan) Hineline, Joscelyn (Derrick Johnson) Baker, Tess (Nate) Parthemore, John R. (Sarah) Galloway, Jake (Kelsey) Galloway, Justin (Emily) Galloway, Jackie (Tyler Scott) Galloway, Brian Spence, Allison (Zach Rogers) Spence, Nathan Spence, Ian Risser and Zoe Risser; 14 great-grandchildren with 2 on the way; his brothers and sisters, Peggy (William) Myers of Huron, Richard (Janice) Galloway of Berlin Heights, Dennis (Sally) Galloway of Sandusky, Sandra "Sandy" (Ben) Haughawout of Milan and Tamara "Tami" (Nyle) Olds of Wakeman; and many nieces and nephews.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents.
