Richard Kaman Obituary

Richard L. "Rich" Kaman, 95, of Sandusky and formerly of Johnson Island, passed away early Sunday afternoon, October 11, 2020, at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Main Campus, Sandusky.
   Born on January 17, 1925, in Sandusky, OH the son of William and Blanche (Palmer) Kaman.  He was a 1944 graduate of St. Mary's High School where he had an outstanding football career and had been inducted into the First Class of the Hall of Fame.   After graduating, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he served honorably during W.W. II.  After being discharged from the Navy, he went into the Bar business with his father and owned and operated Nel's Cafe on Meigs Street and also Kaman's Carry Out for nearly 20 years.  He also worked at Holy Angels Catholic School, Scott Paper and later retired from the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services.  Rich and his wife, Rosemary, spent many winters in Sebring, FL, but their greatest joy was living in their home on Johnson Island.  He was an avid fan of St. Mary's sports, the Cleveland Indians, the Browns, and especially Notre Dame football.  He loved any family time, but most of all he cherished spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 
  Rich was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and in years past, he had been a member of several other organizations and clubs in the local area.  
   He is survived by four daughters, Carol Sue (James) Scherger of Sandusky, Donna (Rick) Lill of Huron, and Kathy (Al) Lawrence, of Sandusky, OH and Sister Linda Kaman R.S.M. of Pittsburgh, PA; three sons, Richard (Tricia) Kaman of Chagrin Falls, OH, David (Julie) Kaman of Bay Village, OH and Daniel (Michelle) Kaman of Huron, OH; 16 grandchildren;  24 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   Rich was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 58 years, Rosemary D. (Herzog) Kaman on February 12, 2006; a grandson, David Kaman (1983); two sisters, Ruth Sellers and Lois Yost; and three brothers, Eugene, William and Thomas "Tom"  Kaman, Sr..
   Private family visitation to be held.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday morning, October 15, 2020, at 10 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Avenue, Sandusky, OH.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.  Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Navy.
   The family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to the Sandusky Central Catholic School Education Foundation, 410 W. Jefferson Street, Sandusky, OH 44870 or to the  National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 6155 Rockside Road, Cleveland, OH 44131.
