Norma Jean Kurtz, 91, of Sandusky, passed away on Oct. 20th, 2020, after a brief illness, at the home of her daughter in Tampa, FL where she resided the last three years. She was born in Huron to the late Clifford and Norma (Yeager) Ernst. Clifford died at the age of 21, just before she was born. She was raised by her late mother and stepfather, Leonard Gruhlke, in Castalia. She considered him her father and always mentioned how wonderful and kind he was to her and her family. In 1948, Norma Jean married Dennis Kurtz and moved to Sandusky. Soon after, he was drafted to serve in the Korean War. When he returned two years later, he met his two-year-old daughter for the first time. At that time, Norma was employed by Philco and then Sts. Peter and Paul school cafeteria until its closure and her retirement in 2003. She will be greatly missed by her family; daughter, Denise Thomas, Tampa; sons, Jim (Debby) Kurtz and Dan (Angela) Kurtz of Sandusky; grandchildren, Melissa (Greg) Leftwich and Amy Thomas, Tampa; Christopher Kurtz, Ashley (Chuck) Smith, Carol Jean (Clay) Whidden, Gina Kurtz, Brian Kurtz, all of Sandusky; great-grandchildren in Tampa, Amanda, Andrew, Austin and Oliver; Jordynn, David, and Jaxson of Sandusky; a brother-in-law, Ronald Kurtz in Hawaii and many nieces and nephews. Norma Jean was preceded in death by her loving husband, Denny (2007); her son-in-law, Jack Thomas (2008); her parents and stepfather. The family is appreciative of the wonderful care her daughter provided these last few years in Tampa, and Life Path Hospice, Tampa, during these last few weeks. Her family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until time of the memorial service at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, November 10th, at the David F. Koch Funeral and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky. Deacon Phil Dinovo officiating. Due to the COVID-19 health concerns, wearing of face masks (they will be offered) and social distancing will be mandatory.
