Nancy Ann Haas, 84, of Sandusky, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, November 28, 2021, at her home with her loving daughter Phyllis at her side.
Born on September 25, 1937, in Sandusky, OH she was the daughter of Fred Joseph and Janet Maribel (Curtis) Haas. Nancy was a 1955 graduate of St. Mary's High School. She worked at the Kroger Grocery Store for over 25 years, before retiring.
Nancy will be remembered by her family for how she loved to watch and answer questions during the game show "Jeopardy." She had a constant thirst for knowledge and would often share interesting and unique facts with her siblings. She was an avid book reader. She was an inveterate crossword solver (in ink!), and participated in a Kroger adult spelling bee. She loved children, flowers, cats, seashells, and the color orange. She had an artistic, creative flair which could be seen in her unique penmanship, unusual Christmas decorations and the perfect, quirky gifts she would give. She was very supportive to everyone around her – relatives and friends alike. Her many nieces claim their love of sand, sun and water comes from Aunt Nancy and their many trips to Cedar Point and Bay Point beaches when they were growing up. Nancy loved her family and her two grandchildren and would attend every possible event of sports, dance or other family activity.
For many years Nancy had volunteered in the classrooms of the Sandusky Public Schools, working mostly at Ontario School where she was known as the "Pencil Lady" for supplying students with wide range of different types and colors of pencils. Nancy was deeply involved in the Child Fund International organization, where she supported and mentored several children in different countries around the world. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and had a particular devotion to the rosary. In years past she was a member of local pool leagues.
Nancy is survived by her daughter, Phyllis J. "PJ" Gruhlke of Sandusky; her grandchildren, Nate Johnson of Sandusky and Heather (Tyler) Arquette of Plain City, OH; her brother, Fred (Mary) Haas; her sisters, Rita Haas, Yasha (Kirk) Arant and Janet (Gene) Lyons; sisters-in-law, Judy, Sue and Janet Haas; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Timothy in infancy, Bill, David, Pat, Ray and Matt Haas; her sister, Kathy Canterbury; and her sisters-in-law, Judith "Judi", and Nova Haas.
It was her wish to be cremated. The family will receive friends on Saturday morning, December 4, 2021, from 9 am until time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Avenue, Sandusky, Fr. Philip Feltman officiating.
