Michael J. Schaefer, 69, of Abingdon, VA, formerly of Sandusky, passed away unexpectedly late Saturday evening, May 5, 2018, at the Johnson City Medical Center, in Johnson City, TN.
Born on March 12, 1949, in Sandusky, Ohio, the son of William A. and Gladys Vivian (Larm) Schaefer, Jr.. He was a graduate of St. Mary's High School and later attended Kent State University and Firelands College at Bowling Green State University. Michael went on to receive his Electrician Journeyman Certification from the Terra Community College, in Fremont, OH. While attending college, he had also owned and operated Schaefer Siding and Remodeling, for several years. He retired after nearly 25 years from the Sandusky Ford Motor Company as an electrician.
Michael was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Ford Union Local #1216.
He is survived by his two grandchildren, Rocco and Antonia James of Sandusky; the mother of his daughter, Betty Schaefer of Sandusky; three brothers, David (Susie) Schaefer of Wasilla, Alaska, William (Jane) Schaefer of Abingdon, VA and Stephen Schaefer of Sandusky; three sisters, Diane (Brad) Tschumper of Elgin, IL, Peggy Spotts of Bowling Green, KY and Nancy (Thomas) Scherer of Sandusky; and other loving relatives.
Michael was preceded in death by his daughter, Cheryl Lynn James (July 2016); and his parents.
It was his wish to be cremated. The family will receive friends on Tuesday morning, May 15, 2018, from 9:15 am until time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Avenue, Sandusky. Fr. Philip Feltman officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.
