Michael Kevesdy, 96, of Sandusky, a scholar, war hero, all American athlete, husband to Stella, father, and grandfather, passed away unexpectedly early Friday evening, December 6, 2019, at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Main Campus, Sandusky.
Mike was a total original.
He described himself as "deliriously alive" "ecstatically American" "provocative and witty," and lived every day with enthusiasm and a true love of conversation.
He was the eldest of five children born to Charles and Martha (Prokopec) Kevesdy, an immigrant. Despite not being able to speak English, a teacher took an interest in him because of how hard he tried, and Mike mastered the language that would be his gift for life. He won a football scholarship, received a purple heart, bronze star, and a silver star while serving honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II, then was able to attend and graduate Ohio Wesleyan on the GI Bill. He was a member of Toastmasters and excelled as a public speaker. He was a devoted husband. A kind and loving father. An unforgettable grandfather. And a friend to all. His sense of fair and kindness extended to those he knew well, and to perfect strangers. He was not only awarded a "Lifetime Learner" award, it is how he lived his life.
He is survived by his daughters, Sharon, Kim, and Karen; his son in law, William Clifford; his four grandchildren, Alex, Zach, Michelle, and Milly are so grateful to have spent this last Thanksgiving with him. We honor him each time we pick up a book, or stay open to new ideas. He was one of the greats of the Greatest Generation.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 60 years, Stella V. (Poggiali) Kevesdy on June 29, 2014; a sister, Helen, in infancy; and two brothers, George and William Kevesdy. He is also survived by his sister, Michael Rompel.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday morning, December 11, 2019, from 9 am until time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky. Fr. Jeff Walker officiating. Burial will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron, OH. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #83 Color Guard.
The family suggests that as a lifelong learner and educator, Michael would appreciate donations to be made in his memory to any educational institute of your choice or to the Sandusky Public Library, 114 W. Adams Street, Sandusky, OH 44870.
