Joseph Lawrence Fitzgerald

Joseph L. Fitzgerald, 68, residing in Sandusky, passed away unexpectedly Friday, Sept. 30, 2022 at his home.

Joe was born October 28, 1953, in Sandusky, to the late Lawrence and Margaret A. (Cassidy) Fitzgerald.

He was a 1972 graduate of Huron High School and worked for the family business, Fitzgerald Electric. He ultimately transitioned into an electrical supply distributor with Crescent Electric Supply, retiring in 2015. He was a proud volunteer for the Huron Fire Department with 25 plus years of dedicated service, and served as past president of the Erie County and Huron Firefighters’ Associations. During that time, he and Dan Matter helped organize Coat-A-Kid in the early 1990’s, when he took great pride in assisting the children of Erie County. He was a member of several local service organizations and supported them frequently. Joe was recently a volunteer driver for Erie County Senior Center and their Meals-on-Wheels program.

He was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

On June 12, 1976, Joe married the love of his life, Cynthia (Pfanner), who survives. Also surviving are their two sons Robert (Courtney) Fitzgerald of Castalia, Ohio and Ryan (Julie) Fitzgerald of Hillard, Ohio. He was the proud Papa of 5 granddaughters, Kennedy, Cassidy, Rylie, Clare, and Reegan. Joe is also survived by his 3 siblings, Timothy (Charmaine) Fitzgerald of Elkton, Florida, Margaret (Charles) Traband of Maumee, Ohio and James (Vicki) Fitzgerald of Huron, Ohio; brothers and sisters in law, Linda (Michael) Goostree of Norwalk, Ohio, Mary Beth (Charles) Williams, and Robert (Rebecca) Pfanner, Sandusky, Ohio; along with several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother and father in law, Robert and Rita (Herzog) Pfanner.

Joe will always be remembered for his kind heart, generosity and devotion to his wife. His granddaughters will fondly remember his Donald Duck voice, swimming in his pool and sitting with him in “Papa’s” chair.

Friends may call 3-6 p.m. Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at David F. Koch Funeral and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, October 6 at 10 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio. Internment will be at Calvary Cemetery.
