John S. "Tater" Fenton, 84, of Sandusky, passed away early Thursday evening, March 10, 2022, at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Main Campus, Sandusky, after battling for nearly 40 years with Diabetes.
Born on January 4, 1938, in Sandusky, OH the son of Maurice Parker and Louise Elizabeth (Bickley) Fenton, Sr.. He was a 1956 graduate of Sandusky High School.
John had worked for the State of Ohio for nearly 20 years as an Inspector and for a few years for the Ohio Road Paving Company. He later went on to work for the City of Sandusky as a Superintendent for the Street Department for nearly 15 years, before retiring.
Over the years, he enjoyed spending time with the family and attending the family gatherings, going camping (which he did for nearly 20 years), he had been an avid reader, and he was also known to enjoy a good cup of coffee always with breakfast at various eateries throughout the years. He always had to pay when members of his family (especially his grandchildren) showed up to join him! John also loved to spend time sitting and watching freighters go by either down on Jackson Street Pier, in Sandusky, or another one of his favorite spots was up in St. Clair, Michigan at the Algonac State Park. John was a man who shared his time, talent and treasures for years. As he had been involved for many of his daughters school years, with the St. Mary's School Band Boosters (which he was past president of) , he also originated the creation of the "French Fry" Wagon for the Band Boosters. John had also been active with St. Mary's Bingo for many years, Care and Share (former president) for 10 years and he had served as a City of Commissioner from 1996 to 2000.
John was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Masonic Science Lodge and the Singara Grotto.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Juanita (Sartor) Fenton whom he married on October 8, 1960; his daughters, Joy (David) Dennis of Perrysburg, Jerilyn (Joseph) Good of Columbus, Jill (Gerard) Schafer of Monroeville and Dee (Jeffery) Acord of Boardman, OH; 9 grandchildren, Bryan (Alexandra) Dennis, Kyle (Lauren) Schafer, Curtis (Rebecca) Good, Melissa (Bryan) Zeller, Erin Dennis, Derrick (Kimberly) Acord, Johnathan (his fiancee, Emma McLain) Acord, Kellie Dennis and Jeremy (Christin) Schafer; his 6 great grandchildren, David Schafer, Bodie Dennis, Crew Schafer, Layne Zeller, Eliza Schafer, Quincy Dennis and one on the way.; his sister, Marcia L. Rotsinger of Sandusky; and several nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Judy Aust; and his brother, Maurice P. Fenton, Jr..
It was his wish to be cremated. His family will receive friends on Thursday morning, March 17, 2022, from 9 am until time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Avenue, Sandusky, OH. Fr. Monte Hoyles officiating.
