John I. Martin, 82, of Sandusky, passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, March 23, 2018, surrounded by his family at The Commons of Providence Memory Care Center, Sandusky.
Born on February 9, 1936, in Fremont,OH the son of James Rossmond and Pearl Evelyn (Martin) Martin. He was a graduate of Fremont Ross High School in Fremont,OH. After high school, John served in the U.S. Army, having been stationed in Germany. He was called back to active duty during the Berlin Crisis. John was a meat cutter for Pick n' Pay Grocery, Sandusky Dress Beef and later at Cardinal Grocery, retiring from the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union. After he retired, he worked part time for Corso's Flower and Garden Center.
He was an active member of St. Stephen United Church of Christ, where he had served on the Church Council and was involved with maintaining the lawn. John was a life member of the AMVETS Post # 17 and the American Legion Post #83.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Alice F. (Neason) Martin, who he married on March 19,1961; two sons, Stephen (Colleen) Martin of Florida and Brian (Amanda) Martin of Sandusky; four grandchildren, Amanda, Kevin, Kristina, and Tanner; four great-grandchildren, a sister, Susann Martin of Sandusky; three brothers, Elmer Martin of Fremont, Bill Martin of California and Bob Martin of Florida; and nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Noel; four sisters; and three brothers.
It was his wish to be cremated. The family will receive friends on Thursday morning, March 29, 2018, from 10 am until time of the memorial service at 11 am at St. Stephen United Church of Christ, 905 E.Perkins Avenue, Sandusky, Rev. Jerald A. Fenske officiating. Inurnment will take place in the Church Columbarium. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post # 83 Color Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to St.Stephen United Church of Christ, 905 E.Perkins Avenue, Sandusky, OH 44870 or to Stein Hospice Service,Inc., 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870.
