James Michael Powers, 70, of Sandusky, entered into eternal rest on Monday, August 21, 2023, at home.
Jim was born in Sandusky, Ohio, June 10, 1953, the son of Kenneth R. and Clara (Mezla) Powers. He was a graduate of Sts. Peter & Paul Grammar School (1967) and Sandusky High School (1971) in Sandusky, Ohio. He earned an Associate of Arts in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Degree from Bowling Green State University (1975) in Bowling Green, Ohio. He graduated from Providence Hospital School of Radiologic Technology (1978) in Sandusky, Ohio, as a Registered Radiologic Technologist.
During grade school Jim was an altar server, a school crossing guard, and a Boy Scout, which included a trip to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. During his high school summers, he worked as a cook at Cedar Point, and also learned the skill of painting while working alongside his father in his business.
Upon graduating from college, Jim worked as a Registered Radiologic Technologist at Lima Memorial Hospital, and then continued his career in the radiology field at Providence Hospital in Sandusky.
Leaving hospital work, Jim began a 15 year career at Sandusky Packaging, followed by a short period of time at LEWCO.
Jim then reentered the medical field at University Hospital Elyria Medical Center as a Radiologic Assistant, before retaking his registry exam to once again become a full time Registered Radiologic Technologist. He ended this 15 year career with his retirement on June 30, 2017.
In his personal life, he began dating Johanna Cundari in 1981 through volleyball with Christian Young Adults, and after 8 years and much teasing from family, they married on May 6, 1989. Over the next 34 years of marriage, Jim and Johanna traveled via car, planes, ships, and trains to 40 states and numerous Caribbean islands. He was a member of the Building and Grounds Committee at Sts. Peter & Paul Church, and was always the handyman for family and neighbors. Throughout the years he provided substantial personal support to his parents, his in-laws, and other family members whenever needed. He enjoyed going to family events, including Baptisms, graduations, weddings, and was present for both happy and sad occasions.
Survivors include his wife Johanna, sister Karen (Thomas) Gdovicak of Catawba Island, Ohio, nieces and nephews Kelly (Stephen) Johnson, Amanda Spears, and Lindsay Gdovicak of Ohio, Christine (Jamie) DiSalvo of Maryland, Michelle (Matt) Hutchins of Pataskala, Ohio, Caterina and James Cundari of Sandusky, Ohio, Darryn (Leah), Bradley (Cassie), and Nicole Horvath of Michigan, grandnieces and grandnephews Ryan Spears, Asher Johnson, Marcus and Silas DiSalvo, Juliette, Wyatt, and Caitlin Hutchins, Eleanor and Mae Horvath, and in-laws Anthony (Anita) Cundari of New Albany, Ohio, Joseph (Giorgia) Cundari of Sandusky, Ohio, Maria (John) Horvath of Oxford, Michigan, his Aunt Margaret Mizla of Marblehead, Ohio, and numerous cousins.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Clara Powers, in-laws James P. and Johanna M. Cundari, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Visitation will be 3 to 7 pm Thursday, August 24, at David F. Koch Funeral & Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky. A prayer service will be held at 6:30 pm at the funeral home on Thursday. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home at 9:30 am Friday, August 25, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, with the Rev. Joseph Szybka and the Rev. Monte Hoyles co-celebrating. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, 2020 Sanford Street, Sandusky.
