James R. "Jim" Ernst, Sr., 72, of Sandusky, passed away unexpectedly early Monday morning, March 21, 2022, at his home.
Born on December 4, 1949, in Toledo, OH the son of Rolland James and Mary Ann (McElroy) Ernst. Jim was a veteran having served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corp. during the Vietnam War. He had worked as a mechanic for Seal Master and later for Midas Muffler for over 50 years before retiring.
Jim enjoyed working on cars and going out riding on his Harley - Davidson. He also enjoyed watching drag racing and at one time had raced at the Norwalk Speedway in his 1966 Mustang. Jim had been a member of the American Legion Post # 166, "Legion Riders," in Goose Creek, SC.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Debra S. (Cody) Ernst whom he married on June 17, 1973; his family, James R. Ernst, Jr., Trisha Ernst, Timothy (Jennifer) Ernst and Brian Ernst, all of Sandusky; his grandchildren, Patrick, Samantha, Elijah, Alison, Kadon, Ianna, Jonah, Malachi, Maxton, and Brittany, who was very special to her grandfather as she went on many road trips with him on his Harley throughout the years; a step granddaughter, Haley; and 7 great-grandchildren; and two friends that were 'like family' to him, Daryl "Dee" Myers and Michael Alexander.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sara "Sissy" Ernst (2004); and a brother, Tom Ernst.
It was his wish to be cremated. Private family services to be held at a later date at Sand Hill Cemetery, Sandusky. Military honors to be conducted by the American Legion Post # 17 and the V.F.W. Post # 2529.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his name to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
