Gilbert D. “Gil” Steinen, Jr. passed away peacefully late Tuesday evening, November 1, 2022 at his home.

Born on September 29, 1928, in Sandusky, Ohio the son of Gilbert David and Thelma Katherine (Galloway) Steinen, Sr.  He was a 1946 graduate of Sandusky High School.  Gil was a longtime farmer and worked for Ohio Edison from 1949 until 1983.  During that time, he also served as the Business Manager for I.B.E.W. Local #1194.  

Gil was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church as well as the Knights of Columbus Council #546.  He was an avid hunter and his passion took him on adventures throughout the USA and Canada.  As a member of The National Wild Turkey Federation, Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, Huron Township Conservation Club and ErieCounty Conservation League, he continued his interest in and support of wildlife and hunting.  Gil was a Member of the Erie County Democratic Party serving on the Central Committee representing Huron Township #3 from 2006-2021. He owned and operated Steinen’s Stables and the Old Dutch Tavern for several years.  Gil was honored with many awards during his lifetime including I.B.E.W. Appreciation Award, Catholic Diocese of Toledo Century Farm Award, Pheasants Forever Habitat Award 2004, Firelands Land Conservancy’s Land Steward of the Year 2004, Erie MetroParks Chairman’s Award 2005 and Clarence Seavers Citizenship Award 2011 .

He is survived by his son, Gary (Sharon Cornett) Steinen of Rifle, Colorado, his daughter, Linda Steinen of Akron, Ohio, his granddaughter, Megan (Bryan) Gump and great-grandson, Jackson Gump of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and two sisters, Mary Petri of Sweetwater, Texas and Doris (Harry) McGookey of Sandusky, Ohio as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins and family members.

Gil was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, David Steinen and two sisters Betty Carlsen and Sally Dibari.

It was his wish to be cremated.  The family will receive friends on Friday morning, Nov 11, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio.  Fr. Monte Hoyle will be officiating.  Burial will be held at a later date at Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, c/o Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 510 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio 44870 or to the West Huron Youth Club, P.O. Box 91, Huron, Ohio 44839
