Francis Hugh McKenna

 Francis H. "Fran" McKenna, 94, of Sandusky, passed away peacefully early Monday morning, April 13, 2020, at the Providence Care Center, Sandusky.
   Born on May 6, 1925, in Sandusky, OH the son of Alex and Alma (Ging) McKenna.. He was a 1943 graduate of Sandusky High School and later graduated from the University of Dayton, in 1950, where he had played on the University Golf Team.   Fran was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served honorably on the U.S.S. Pennsylvania in the Pacific Ocean during W.W. II.    He had worked as a material sales associate for nearly 20 years at Vulcan Materials, before retiring in 1987.  After retiring, he went on to do consulting work at Thacker Aluminum for a few years (1993).   Fran was inducted into the St. Mary Central Catholic High School Hall of Fame for Community Service, for his involvement  in the development and the running of the CYO Basketball program in the schools for many years.
   Over the years, Fran had been an avid sports fan and golfer, having golfed in the K of C League.  He also had volunteered his time as a driver for the Senior Center for over 10 years.
   He was also a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Sandusky Council #546, where he was a past Grand Knight (1974 - 1975), member of the V.F.W. Post # 2529, and the University of Dayton Alumni Association.
   Fran is survived by his wife of 68 years, Janis E. (Cook) McKenna, whom he married on January 26, 1952; his two sons, Timothy (Sherry) McKenna of Sandusky and John (Susan) McKenna of Frisco, TX: his four daughters, Elizabeth "Beth" McKenna  of Parma,  Molly (Doug) Windisch of Sandusky; Julie (Peter) Stokes of Catawba Island,  and Jennifer "Jenny" Rowles of Oak Harbor, OH;   11 Grandchildren,  Kari, Kristy, Matthew, Tami, Jacob, Kelli, Drew, Dane, Aaron, Kyle, and Patrick; nine great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Chuck Austin of Ft. Wayne, IN; and several nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Sharon Austin (January 3, 2017); a grandson, Jeffrey J. McKenna (2003); his son-in-law, Jim Rowles; three brothers, Louis "Lou" McKenna, James "Jim" McKenna and Faber McKenna; his sister-in-laws,  Bernice, Elsie and Kay McKenna. 
   Do to the current Coronavirus pandemic restrictions the funeral services will be private.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky.  Fr. Jeff Walker officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.
   The family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of NW Ohio, 401 Tomahawk Drive, Maumee, OH 43537, Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, OH 44870 or to the Sandusky Central Catholic School Education Foundation Fund, 410 W. Jefferson Street, Sandusky, OH 44870.
