Eugene Norbert "Gene" Harkelroad, 81, residing in Sandusky, OH passed away late Thursday morning, May 12, 2022, following a battle with Parkinson's with family by his side.
Born on July 8, 1940, in Sandusky, OH to the late Norbert Ignatius and Helen Marie (Fritz) Harkelroad.
Gene graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1958. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He served on the Home Builders for 50 years and was president for 8 of those years. He was a member of several golf leagues, card clubs, the Cedar Point Association, bowling leagues, the Knights of Columbus Council # 546, Milan Jaycees and the Roller Skating Association.
Gene was a man of so many talents. He started and built 13 plus pizza restaurants that were managed by many different families including his own (in Ohio, Indiana, North Carolina). He started his own pizza supply business that would supply the pizza restaurants with Federson's pizza dough and Grande Wisconsin cheese. Gene built the Kings Court Motel located on 250 S (Milan Road). He owned and operated a Shell Gas Station, a car wash, putt putt and a driving range. Building homes was what he really enjoyed doing. He built 10 plus homes in the surrounding area. The Cedar Point home on the water was the one of his most loved properties that he built. The water was what gave him the most sense of peace. Our dad has always enjoyed making everyone happy. We believe that is why he built the Sandusky Skate World Fun Center for all families to have FUN FUN FUN !
One of the greatest joys in his life was his family. He would always find time to make every special event in his children's, grandchildren's and great grandchildren's lives.
Gene is survived by his son, Rick Harkelroad of Ft. Wayne, IN; his four daughters, Debra (Roger) Ashton of Galveston, TX, Tracy (Jeff Kuhl) Lake of Norwalk, Kim (Dennis) Barker of Norwalk and Lisa (Rich) Percival of Peru, IN; 15 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. In addition to his family he leaves behind his love, Leslie Wilson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Geraldine "Gerry" Woodin and Marilyn Harkelroad; and his two brothers, David and Donald "Don" Harkelroad.
It was his wish to be cremated. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 16, 2022, from 4-7 pm at the David F. Koch Funeral and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Gene on Tuesday morning, May 17, 2022 at 10 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Avenue, Sandusky. Fr. Jacob George officiating.
