Erma Marie (Berardi) Canning

Erma Marie (Berardi) Canning, 93, of Sandusky, Ohio passed away peacefully late Wednesday evening, August 12, 2020, at The Providence Care Center, Sandusky.
   Erma was born March 2, 1927, in Faetano, San Marino to Adam and Teresa (Astolfi) Berardi.  As an infant, she immigrated on a ship across the Atlantic Ocean to the United States, where her family settled in Sandusky, Ohio.  She graduated from Sandusky High School in 1944 and spent the rest of her life there.
   Erma loved cooking and baking, with dessert being one of her favorites.  She especially enjoyed preparing meals for her children and grandchildren.  She enjoyed attending community gatherings and Mass at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Sandusky.  Watching and rooting for the Cleveland Indians was also a favorite pastime of hers.
   After the death of her husband, Francis "Bud" Canning, in 1968 , she became an example of strength and resilience for her children.  For over 20 years, she had a career as a cook and supervisor in several Sandusky Public School cafeterias so that her children could further their education, get married, and have careers and families of their own.
   Erma is survived by her daughters, Barb (James) Stengle, Rene (Robert) Derge, Francine Russell; a son, John (Christine) Canning; and eight grandchildren, Sarah, Ryan, Patrick, Sean Stengle, Emma (James) Trotta, Sam Derge, Echo Russell, and Adam Canning;  and one great-grandchild, Colin Joseph Derge.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, Adam and Teresa Berardi; her husband, Francis "Bud" Canning; and her two brothers, Nello and Robert Berardi.
   Visitation will be held Tuesday morning, August 18, 2020, from 8:30 am until time of prayers at 9:30 am at the David F. Koch Funeral and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky.  Due to the COVID-19 health concerns, wearing of face masks (they will be offered) and social spacing will be mandatory.  If you are uneasy about attending, please feel free to leave a message to the family on the website.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 428 Tiffin Avenue, Sandusky.  Fr. Chris Jesudhason officiating.  Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Sandusky.
