Eleanor Miller Obituary

Another member of the Greatest Generation has gone home to be with Our Lord.  Eleanor Y. Miller, 97, of Sandusky, passed away April 12, 2021, at Firelands Regional Medical Center after a short illness.

Eleanor was born on September 11, 1923, in a farm house in Seneca County near Republic, Ohio.  She was the daughter of Lee Joseph and Iris D. (Somers) Young.  Eleanor attended a one room schoolhouse most of her elementary years and graduated from Tiffin Columbian High School in 1941.

Eleanor married Leonard L. Miller on June 27, 1944.  She traveled to Norfolk, Virginia, and met Leonard for a small ceremony in the Lutheran Chapel while he was on leave from the Navy.

In her early days, Eleanor was an executive and legal secretary in Tiffin and Columbus, and more recently, she worked at Kellogg’s Professional Products in Sandusky.  She had incredible speed in both typing and short hand.

Eleanor was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church since 1953 and participated in numerous ministries including Church Council.  At one point she was President of the Women of the Church. She also served as a money counter for 30 years.  Eleanor was especially dedicated to the mission of the Care and Share Room that supplied clothing for needy children and adults in the community.  She was one of the volunteers who served throughout its almost 20 years of operation until Erie County began providing the services.

Eleanor is survived by a daughter, Ann (Blaise) Congeni of Akron; a son, Timothy (Linda) Miller of Sandusky; daughter-in-law Irene Miller of Sandusky; five grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.  She is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Eleanor was especially appreciative of all those who kept in touch with her throughout her Parkvue years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 65 years, Leonard L. Miller (May 10, 2010); a son, William L. “Bill” Miller (October 4, 2020); her sister, Louise Craig; and three brothers, Ernest, Irving and Claude Young.

It was her wish to be cremated.  The family will receive friends on Saturday afternoon, April 24, 2021, from 2 pm until time of the memorial service at 4 pm at  the David F. Koch Funeral and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky.  Due to the COVID-19 health concerns, the wearing of face masks (they will be offered) and social spacing will be mandatory.  If you are uneasy about attending,  please feel free to leave a message to the family on our website. Pastor Wally Gilbert officiating .  Burial will be in Block Cemetery, Cooper, Ohio, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made in her memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959 or to Akron Children’s Hospital, One Perkins Square, Akron, OH 44308-1062, or any charity that is close to your heart.
