Dorothy M. (Kapanke) Hammond, 94, of Sandusky, passed away late Saturday morning, September 5, 2020, at the Parkvue Health Care Center, Sandusky, after a lengthy illness.
Born on October 27, 1925, in Lorain, OH the daughter of Gustave A. and Augusta Julia (Dircks) Kapanke. She was a 1943 graduate of Lorain High School. Dorothy had worked as a telephone operator for Ohio Bell, in Sandusky, for 30 years, retiring in 1978.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the Zion Women of the Church (where she had served as the president from 1983-1984 and the secretary from 1989-1990), a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and been a member of the Sandusky Women Bowling Association ("Roll-in-Pins") .
Dorothy is survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 67 years, Earl R. Hammond (July 3, 2015); three sisters, Esther H. Fix, Laurene Schwab and Hilda A. Lamprecht; and her two brothers, Clarence W. and Herbert L. Kapanke.
It was her wish to be cremated. Private family graveside services to be held. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made in her memory to the Earl and Dorothy Hammond Scholarship Fund, c/o Sandusky City Schools, 407 Decatur Street, Sandusky, OH 44870; Zion Lutheran Church, 503 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, OH 44870; or to one's favorite charity.
