Craig D. Smith, 84, of Sandusky, passed away unexpectedly early Tuesday afternoon, September 8, 2020, at his home from natural causes.
Born on July 15, 1936, Sandusky, OH the son of Russell Raymond and Dorothy A. (Scherer) Smith. He was a 1954 graduate of St. Mary's High School and later graduated from John Carroll University. For over 40 years, he has owned and operated a well known local establishment, "The Tea House." For nearly 45 years, Craig had refereed (Head Referee) high school basketball and football. He will be remembered by his family for his love of the game and how he could recall, in detail, everything that happened in each and every game that he had officiated.
In his earlier days, he liked to hunt and at one time had a bird dog named "Spike." He also, in years past, enjoyed golfing and had been a member of the Wednesday Night Golf League.
Craig had also over the years been an active member of several different local clubs and groups in the area.
He is survived by three daughters, Therese (Mike Hvizdos) Muratori, Nanette (Randy) Hiser and Judy (Terry Mohamed) Smith; and a son, Craig R. Smith; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Carol Mulvin; and five nephews.
Craig was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother-in-law, Charles "Sonny" Mulvin.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2020, from 2-7 pm at the David F. Koch Funeral and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky. Due to the COVID-19 health concerns, wearing of face masks (they will be offered) and social distancing will be mandatory. If you are uneasy about attending, please feel free to leave a message to the family on the website. Private family funeral services to be held. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.
