William Edward Newman, Sr.

October 15, 1936 ~ January 28, 2018 (age 81)

William E. "Bill" Newman, Sr. 81, of Sandusky, passed away peacefully January 28, 2018, surrounded by his family at the Providence Care Center. 

  Born on October 15, 1936, in Proctorville, OH the son of Harry Carlton and Lola Belle (White), Bill was a 1954 graduate of Dawson Bryant High School in Coal Grove, OH.  He was a veteran, having served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1954 - 1957, during the Korean Conflict.   When Bill first moved to the area he was an insurance agent for Nationwide Insurance, having his own agency from 1969 until 1975. He went on to sell cars for Erie Chrysler, Mathews Ford and Newman’s Vacationland Motors before retiring in 2002.

  He was a die-hard Cleveland sports fan, cheering on the Indians, the Cavaliers and the Browns over the years.  What he truly loved was Christmas time and he took great pride in his light displays at his home for all to enjoy during the holiday.  Bill was a life member of the American Legion Post #83 and the V.F.W. Post #2529.  In the 1970's, he was a member and past president of the Perkins Chamber of Commerce and was instrumental in the creation of the first softball field at the Ohio Veterans Home.

  Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Linda Lou (Ford) Newman, whom he married on February 6, 1958; four children: William E. "Rocky" (Lisa) Newman of Oxford, OH, Tim (friend Carol Bean) Newman  of Sandusky,  Lola C. "Cathy" Gitschier (fiancé Greg Byington) of Canton, OH and Vicki S. (Michael) Catri of Williston, ND; he was “Papaw” to nine grandchildren, Lindi (Jeremy) Eddington, Rhys and Marshall Newman, Celeste and Anna Catri, Corry and Erin Newman, Karli Newman and Lyndia Rivera; two great-grandchildren, Liz and Macy; seven brothers and sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

  He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sarah N. "Nicki" Serrano; granddaughter, Erika Newman; and four brothers.

  The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 17, 2018, from 10 a.m, until time of the memorial service at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen United Church of Christ, 905 E. Perkins Avenue, Sandusky with Rev. Robert R. Bottoms officiating.

  The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to American Heart Association, Ohio Valley Affiliate, P.O. Box 163549, Columbus, Ohio 43216-3549; alzheimer's association, Northwest Ohio Chapter, 2500 N. Reynolds Rd, Toledo, Ohio 43615-2820; or to one's favorite charity.

  Arrangements are entrusted to the David F. Koch Funeral and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky.
