Richard A. "Dick" Harman, 83, of Huron, passed away early Saturday afternoon, September 21, 2019, at Firelands Regionqal Medical Center, Main Campus, Sandusky, after a brief illness.
Born on April 11, 1936, in Columbus, OH the son of Wilber and Elvira Elizabeth (Farber) Harman. Dick was a graduate of North High School, in Columbus, and later graduated from the University of Toledo. He was a veteran, having served honorably in the U.S. Army. For nearly 30 years, Dick had been the vocational auto instructor at Sandusky High School before retiring in 2000. Prior to that, he had owned and operated a Service Station for awhile in Huron, OH.
Before heading off to serve in the U.S. Army in 1959, he had worked part-time as a Huron Police Officer. In 1974, Dick joined the Huron Police Department as a Safety Forces Photographer and had also served in the same capacity with the Huron Fire Department as a firefighter/photographer since 1964. He will be remembered by his family and friends as one who loved anything that moved, being it be a bike, car, motorcycle or an airplane. He also had a love for all dogs.
Being that he was an avid airplane pilot, he had served on the Board, for 15 years, for the Erie-Ottawa International Airport in Port Clinton, OH. For over 50 years, he was known to gather with his friends and sit at the Round Table at Griffiing Airport for lively conservation amongst them. Dick was also a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association for over 30 years, the American Motorcycle Association and the Masonic Marks Lodge # 359 F & AM for many years.
He is survived by his sister, Charlene; a nephew and nieces; a special friend, Nancy Kamps; and several other friends.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 24, 2019, from 4-7 pm at the David F. Koch Funeral and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, and Wednesday morning, September 25, 2019, from 10 am until time of the funeral services at 11 am at the Columbus Avenue United Methodist Church, 2401 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky. Rev. Erin E. Porter officiating. It was his wish to be cremated following the funeral services. Interment will take place later in Scott Cemetery, in Huron, OH.
