Richard Marshall Obituary

Richard "Dick" H. Marshall, aged 95, Sandusky, OH passed away peacefully at the Ohio Veterans Home on June 27, 2019.   He was born in Sandusky on March 16, 1924,  to Esther (Jackson) and Howard Marshall. He married his high school sweetheart, Natalie (Houk) in 1948, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary shortly before her death in 1998.

 A graduate of Sandusky High School, Class of 1942, Dick immediately enlisted in the United States Air Force to serve his country in World War II.  As a 1st Lieutenant, he was a fighter pilot and flew P-47’s with the 406th Squadron in Germany.  After serving 4 years of active duty, he returned to the States continuing his service for 25 years in the U. S. Air Force Reserves and retired with the rank of Major.  Dick’s military career has been chronicled in a book entitled “Our Heroes are not Forgotten, Volume IV.”

Dick worked for the Ohio Edison Company in Sandusky for 40 years beginning as a lineman and retiring as a foreman in 1986. 

Dick had a diverse interest in community service and organization membership.  He served as a member or in a leadership role for the International Management Council, American Red Cross, Sandusky Yacht Club, U. S. Power Squadron, American Legion, and the Ohio Edison Men’s Club.   Dick enjoyed volunteering and spent many hours with the Boy Scouts of American as a merit badge counselor, Firelands Regional Medical Center at the Information Desk, and as a playground monitor for Sts. Peter and Paul School. An avid Lyman boater, he enjoyed sharing his passion for Lake Erie at the Maritime Museum.

Dick is survived by his loving children:  Michael (Marilyn) Marshall, Anne (Jim) McGookey, Laurie (Mark) Fogg, and Betsy (Jeff) Poggiali.   His 8 grandchildren will miss him terribly: 

Brian Marshall (Pierre-Jacques Brault), Daniel Marshall (Robert Johnson), Kyle (Jessica) Marshall, Nick (Kelly) Maschari, Kurt (Jennifer) Maschari, Megan Holley, Mitchell (Nikki) Fogg, Meredith (Fred) Van Dongen.   He leaves behind 11 great-grandchildren:  Paige, Quinn, Grace, Gabe, Bennett, Knox, Deagen, Emma, Lucas and Jack, and Parker.  He was loved by his special nieces and nephews, Robert Stoll, Pam Amway, Paulette Grimbso, Tim Smith.

Beside his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Natalie, (October 10, 1998), sister, Ruth Unkrich, and grandparents.

Visitation will be held Tuesday morning, July 2, 2019, from 9 AM until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky.  Fr. Monte Hoyles ​​officiating.   Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #83 Color Guard.    Wishing to be cremated, there will be a private internment in Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky.    

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Cancer Services or Erie County, 505 E. Perkins Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio 44870; Maritime Museum of Sandusky, 125 Meigs Street, Sandusky, Ohio 44870; Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio 44870.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the nursing staff of 2 North and the Dietary Department- Secrest Nursing Home at the Ohio Veterans Home.  Their friendship and loving care and compassion for their father was immeasurable and for that they will be forever grateful.
