Eugene 'Gene' Fitzthum, Sr Obituary

Eugene F. "Gene" Fitzthum, Sr., 94, of Sandusky, passed away peacefully early Tuesday afternoon, September 24, 2019, with family at his side at the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky, after brief  illness.
   Born on October 17, 1924, in Sandusky, OH the son of Joseph and Anna (Kieffer) Fitzthum.   Gene was a 1942 graduate of Sandusky High School.  He was a veteran of W.W. II having served honorably in the U.S. Army and a two time recipient of the Bronze Star.  Gene worked for the Erie County Department of Sealer of Weights and Measures for a few years, retiring in 1985.  Prior to that, Gene had worked at the Sears Department Store and Weber's Men Store.  For over 30 years he had volunteered at the Ohio Veterans Home.  For the thousands of hours of volunteering at the Home he was inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame class of 2008.
   Gene was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a charter and life member of the AMVETS Post # 17 where he had been the Finance Officer for many years, a member of the V.F.W. Post # 2529 and the American Legion Post # 83.
   He is survived by his daughter, Colleen M. Wolf of Sandusky; four sons, Robert (Sue) Fitzthum of Wichita, KS, Eugene F. "Dusty" (Donna) Fitzthum, Jr. of Sandusky, James E. (Diane) Fitzthum of Sandusky and Barry G. (Tana) Fitzthum of Amboy, WA; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Schiffel and Barbara Fitzthum; a brother, George (Rosemary) Fitzthum; and nieces and nephews.
   Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Geraldine C. (Engel) Fitzthum (1970); his second wife, Elaine E. (Mapus) Fitzthum (2019); his son, Brad G. Fitzthum (2013); a sister, Mary Louise Snowden; and two brothers, Joseph and John Fitzthum.
   A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Gene on Monday morning, September 30, 2019, at 10 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Avenue, Sandusky. Fr. Chris Jesudhason officiating.  Following the service it was Gene's wishes to be cremated.  Interment will be held later in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.
   The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made in his memory to one's favorite charity.
