Richard F. Zigmond Obituary

Richard F. "Dick" Zigmond, 94, of Sandusky, passed away peacefully late Saturday morning, February 24, 2024, at the Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky.

He was born on April 15, 1929, in Erie, Pennsylvania to the late Frank and Margaret (Greener) Zigmond.  After graduating from Sandusky High School in 1949, he served honorably for 4 years in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.  Upon returning home, he graduated from Elyria Business College and began a career in the construction materials industry in sales and later as a sales manager for over three decades.  Dick continued sales in a different direction as owner and operator of the R. F. Zigmond Realty Co. in Sandusky.

Many will remember him for his generous spirit, boundless energy and enthusiasm and devotion to his wife, children and grandchildren.

Dick was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where he served as a lay Eucharistic minister, visiting the Ohio Veterans Home, area nursing homes and private homes throughout the community.  He enjoyed attending Mass at Sorrowful Mother Shrine in Bellevue, and was proud of his membership in the Precious Blood Companions there.  Dick was also a member of Disabled American Veterans, Catholic War Veterans, V.F.W. Post # 2529, A.M.V.E.T.S. Post # 17, Kiwanis Club, Knights of Columbus Council # 546 and Toastmasters.  He was a founding member of the Sandusky Underwater Explorers Club and was an excellent swimmer, having been a member of the 1946 Sandusky High Swim Team State Champions.   Dick loved being outdoors and could be found fishing for bass whenever and wherever he could.  But his greatest enjoyment was playing golf, and somewhere in heaven there is a golf course and Dick Zigmond just made a hole-in-one.

Dick is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 68 years, Barbara J. (Wood) Zigmond, whom he married on September 3, 1955; his children, Wendy (Steve) Kamann of Conway, SC, Nancy (Ed) Cooksey of Adrian, MI and their children: Brandon and Bryan; and Michael (Regina) Zigmond of Avon Lake, OH and their son, Leo; and his two nephews, Randy and Rob Glovinsky.

He was preceded inn death by his parents; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Wood; and his special sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Leo Glovinsky.
