Karen Carroll Obituary

Karen Ann (Lang) Carroll, 82 years old, of Sandusky, OH passed away on February 21, 2024, at Providence Care Center.

Born on March 12, 1941, in Chicago, IL, she was the daughter of Leo A. and Cecilia A. (Metzler) Lang.   Karen was a graduate of Immaculata High School in Chicago and she had worked for a few years at Northern Trust Bank and The Lasalle Bank.  After getting married, she also helped her husband at his dental office in Sandusky, OH.  Karen later worked for the Erie County Board of Education, as a teacher’s aide, for nearly 10 years before retiring.

Over the years, she enjoyed reading, birding, gardening, and playing cards with her bridge club friends for over 50 years. She enjoyed getting together with her church friends.  Karen enjoyed serving as a Girl Scout Leader for many years when her daughters were young. Married in 1963, she enjoyed being a wife and mother. Family was very important to her.

She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church where she had been active with the bereavement luncheon program and volunteered at the school.  Karen was a member of the Republican Women’s Group and the Christian Women’s Club for many years.

She is survived by her three daughters, Denice M. (Richard) Schafer of Boardman, OH; Darlene A. Carroll of East Amherst, NY; and Cynthia A. Brodman of Tiffin, OH and her son Timothy J. (Richele) Carroll of Mesa, AZ, nine grandchildren including Erin (Schafer) Schmidt, Matthew Schafer, Michael Schafer, Brittany Brown, Nicholas Brown, Alexandra Brown, Joseph Brodman, Emma (Brodman) Huth-Fretz, and Cecilia Brodman and three great-grandchildren: Layla Hooker, Luna Huth-Fretz, Amelia Brodman with another to be born in May. She is survived by four former sisters-in-law, Rita Thompson, Bonnie Huber, Bev Carroll, and Mary Anne Carroll, a brother-in law, Richard (Debbie) Carroll and many nieces and nephews.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents; her very special maternal grandparents, Anna and Andrew Metzler, whom raised Karen from when she was only 3 months old until she turned 12 years old; her paternal grandparents Mary and Casper Lang; three infant sons, Thomas, Michael and Steven Carroll; her former husband, Thomas J. Carroll (2002); her in-laws Esther (Riesterer) and John L. Carroll; a former son-in law Richard Brodman, a grandson John Richard Brodman ( 2017); her brother Leo A. Lang; her sister Diana Veriha of Porterfield, WI (2023) and brother-in-law John Veriha; three former brothers-in-law John Carroll, James Carroll, Larry Thompson; and a former sister-in-law, Margaret (Peggy) Sndyer.
